Full bios
Formally trained as a computational physicist, building numerical simulations of phenomena too complex to solve on paper, Moses chose a software career out of a practical desire to make things people use. From his early work in bioinformatics for mouse mutant models of disease to leading a startup software team to make drug discovery more collaborative, the common thread has been Moses' delight in solving complex, multidisciplinary problems with technology. At Flare, he leads the ML research behind ReferAI. Moses has a PhD in physics from the University of Chicago and an AB magna cum laude from Harvard.
As both an artist and a physician, Sehjin tries to see things differently. Training in the rigors of both science and visual art, growing up in a first-generation family business, and practicing medicine across the full spectrum of clinical settings all prepared Sehjin to solve big problems by hacking practical solutions from the mundane. Sehjin is a double board-certified otolaryngologist and facial plastic reconstructive surgeon. She studied at Parsons School of Design and the School of the Art Institute, and completed her BA and MD at the University of Chicago.
They lead a team working across Chicago, Kansas, Los Angeles, and Miami.
Why we exist
Every day, physicians make one of the most consequential decisions in medicine: where to send their patient. The referral determines where care happens and what happens next. But for everyone involved, the experience is still broken. The referring physician wonders if they sent their patient into a black hole. The specialist walks in blind, piecing the story together in the exam room. Health system staff fight through phone trees and fax-backs just to connect the two sides. And the patient has to quarterback their own care, overwhelmed and unsure if they're getting the right answer.
We started with the referring physician's experience and built backward into the health system's operations. What does the sending physician actually want? The right specialist, timely scheduling, and word back. What does the health system want? To be the place that physician chooses, every time. Those turn out to be the same problem.
Today Flare is in production at some of the country's leading health systems, reading their referral faxes, carrying their referrals, and closing their loops. The long view hasn't changed since day one: making the right specialist discoverable for every patient, everywhere. We want the same healthcare system everybody wants: a thriving community of passionate experts doing what they love and do best, freed from barriers to provide great care for their patients.
