User Research Lead
Remote | Full-time
How might we build a great product? There are many paths. All involve the team developing a deep, shared understanding of the people and processes impacted by our work.
Flare Health is hiring an experienced user researcher to lead the charge. We are a small and mighty crew, and you will be the only person with “user research” in their title, but you are not joining a user research team of one. We believe everyone should participate directly in research in some way on an ongoing basis. We’ve hired a group of people excited to work with you to develop that first-hand understanding.
About Flare
Flare Health helps doctors find doctors to help you. We work with physicians and hospital systems across the country to ensure their patients are referred to experts who offer the specific, specialized care they need.
Our mission is to make the healthcare system work better for everyone, and that goal is what gets us up in the morning. We have built this into a growing business and are adding to the team funded by customer revenue.
What we can do together
Everyone at a small startup wears a fluid medley of hats. But your focus, what draws your interest back again and again, will be understanding the people, organizations, and systems impacted by our work. This is not a quasi product management role. At Flare Health user research is its own noble career track. It’s essential expertise we want to practice on a level with the world’s best.
Because we’re small, you will tackle a broad spectrum of research tasks – tactical to strategic, evaluative to generative – that encompass the full range of stakeholders from physicians, to patients, to practice staff, to provider and payer administration.
We have fundamental problems to figure out this year. How do patients
At a larger company you might subspecialize in one of these areas, but here you’ll get to explore how they all fit together. You will report directly to the CEO/co-founder and work together with all of us, getting our hands dirty, engaging with the outside world to build awareness across the team. Rather than asking you to “be the voice of the user,” we want you to collaborate with us to ensure users’ voices are echoing continually through all of our heads.
Requirements
Research experience
5+ years experience as a product-focused user researcher
Deep understanding of generative and evaluative research
Comfort adapting and mixing methods to address the needs of specific projects without significant guidance
Qualitative research depth
Demonstrated facility as an interviewer and active listener, helping participants drive the conversation
Successful practical experience with intercepts and other guerrilla research methods to access participants and derive meaningful insights on startup budgets and timelines
Innate curiosity about people & organizations, why they behave the way they do
Facilitative approach
Strong moderation and facilitation skills, able to run informal workshops to bring different groups and voices together across the company
Challenge the team to find solutions for the right problems, and partner with other team members to make sure we act on insights
Strong synthesis skills
Skilled at pinpointing opportunities and recommendations from interviews and data
Make good choices for documentation that best summarizes synthesis sessions to memorialize key insights efficiently and clearly
What you will work on
We have a number of immediate research projects already or soon-to-be underway to validate existing functionality and user flows. In addition, our major company project for 2022 is to refine the community version of our platform, and this will involve a lot of generative and evaluative work to refine our understanding of independent physicians’ context, the community version’s jobs-to-be-done, and what approaches are most effective at converting physicians to become users of the platform.
You will also structure and facilitate an ongoing program of foundational research to better understand physicians, practice staff, health system administrators, hospitals, and the US healthcare system. With our limited number of team members and resources, how you choose to focus the company’s research work is crucial here to maximize progress and impact.
