Lead/Principal Developer

Flare Health helps doctors find doctors to help you. We work with leading hospital systems across the country to connect patients needing specialized care with their physicians’ expertise. Our mission to make health care better for everyone is what gets us up in the morning.

We have built a sustainable business and are growing the team funded by customer revenue. Recurring revenue increased 60% in 2020 despite the pandemic, and we expect that will accelerate in 2021.

This is an opportunity to lead the technical direction of a small and mighty team. You’ll work with leadership that values and understands software development and will provide you with the conditions to do your best work:

  • Valuing code quality, TDD, etc.
  • Seeing past sales checklists to build a product with real impact
  • Welcoming exploration of new & different tech to find the right solution
  • Supporting developer happiness with automation and the right tools

We are open to a range of titles for this position (Lead Developer, Principal Developer) commensurate with experience.

About you

Successful candidates will demonstrate significant experience with the following.

  • Hands-on technical leadership: code craft, code design, technology selection and use
  • Code design principles in object-oriented and functional languages, and common architectural patterns
  • Automated testing: TDD, unit vs. acceptance, managing maintainability and coverage
  • Some of: JavaScript/Ember, React, Vue, or similar; Ruby/Rails; Java/Spring Boot
  • Pluses: mobile development, secure coding, dev ops

Your first year with us

Here’s how we imagine your first year with us.

You’ll spend the first month learning about our products and codebase by collaborating with the rest of the team: pair programming to deliver a production feature in your first two weeks and shadowing user research and client services to get some firsthand user context.

You will work full stack on both our mobile and Web apps and Rails/Spring Boot backend, iterating on features until we know they are having a meaningful impact for users. Your insistence on well written, well designed code will find common cause with other members of our team, and your experience with automated testing and knowledge of all the ways it can be useful (and less useful) will elevate our automated testing practice.

Over the coming year you will enable us to tackle strategic technical projects: major, new user-facing features and products, broad architecture & infrastructure improvements to support scaling and high availability, and increased automation of the product delivery and development workflow.

We’ll look back on our first year knowing we did great work together. And three years from now, you will know that you made healthcare more effective, better coordinated, and more human for patients and the people who care for them.
